Daniel Cormier

The Famed ESPY awards was a bit different this year.  Held in Las Angeles CA., for the first time mixed martial arts (MMA) had its own category.

Competing for “MMA Fighter of the Year,” was women’s champ, Amanda Nunes, Bantamweight and Flyweight champion Henry Cejudo, Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier and interim Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya.

The award was given by UFC president Dana White and announced Cormier as the winner.  The trophy was awarded outside on the red carpet.  DC said post win, “Its exciting.  I can’t believe I have and ESPY.  I’m just a kid from Louisiana.  To be in a category with such talented fighters it’s amazing.  Thank you, truly blessed.”

He had previously talked about retiring from the cage, but said when asked about it, that he is feeling better than he has in a long time.

Cormier is a veteran fighter and has proved overtime to be one of the most celebrated of all tie.    The event was held on Wednesday.
