A North Carolina father lost his life on Sunday afternoon when two of his children were swept off the jetty into the water at high tide at a state beach.

35 year-old Johnny Lee Vann Jr saw two of his children pulled into the Atlantic, dropped everything in both hands a sprinted to the water, he successfully rescued one child.   He re-entered the water after a second child and was reported under for about 30 seconds once he got to the second child and had to be rescued himself.

The tragedy happened at Wrightsville Beach near Wilmington.

The family of 9 went to church and after church decided to go to the beach for a little R&R.  His wife Dawn said,”He never hesitated,' she said, speaking of her husband's heroics. 'He threw everything down – phone keys and ran out there.”

A nearby fishing boat captain said the area was not well posted with warning signs.

The family has set up a GOFUNDME page to bury the heroic father of 7.
